See post for notes from my check-in meeting with Steven today.

  1. Mussel DNA Extraction question –> how can I ensure I’m subsetting tissue from the whole body?

GitHub Issue discussion: here. He mentioned using a sonicator to create a slurry of the whole body tissue, but in the GitHub issue Sam mentioned (and Steven agrees) that using liquid nitrogen and a mortar and pestle is probably better. Asking how to get access to liquid N and also best methods for cleaning mortar and pestle in between samples in the issue!

  1. Multi-species draft

I’m almost done with the current version of the draft and have a good chunk of time tomorrow to dedicate to wrapping it up, and I’ll send it to Steven and Drew after tomorrow for review. From there, I’ll reach out to coauthors, etc, but will give Steven and Drew a look through firs.

  1. General Exam

So the grad student guide says that in order to schedule a general exam, the committee needs to receive the finished proposal 4 weeks prior to the exam date. I’m planning to send out a scheduling email (3hour time chunk) to my committee with the goal of scheduling it for early December, putting my proposal deadline to early November (~3 weeks from now).

  1. Oyster work

I need to write summary notebook posts for both the El Niño and the Oyster Family projects that I helped with. I’ll compile posts from B and Ariana to include in those summaries as well.

  1. IBIS Program

Steven is ok with me applying to be a mentor through the IBIS program, so I just submitted that application.

Action Items:

  1. Finish the multispeces draft and send to Steven and Drew tomorrow afternoon.
  2. Send scheduling email to committee to schedule general exam.
  3. Finish summary notebook posts for the El Niño and Oyster Family projects.
  4. Get mussel DNA extracted.
  5. Finish draft of PhD proposal (have complete by early November or sooner)
